Redland City Council commits to become Dementia-Friendly

Council to be officially recognised

On 21 September, Dementia Australia will officially recognise the Redland City Council for committing to making the Redlands Dementia-Friendly at an event hosted by the Redland Coast Dementia Community at the Donald Simpson Centre, Cleveland.

The Redland Coast Dementia Community is one of 30 community groups in Australia run by volunteers who want to increase awareness and understanding of dementia. It has been working with Redland City Council and the other local organisations to make the Redlands a Dementia-Friendly Community.

In Redland City 3,418 residents live with a dementia diagnosis. This number is expected to reach 8,722 over the next 30 years. According to Marie-Louise Bone of Dementia Australia, people living with dementia want to stay active in their community, enjoying the activities and services they always have. But one of the biggest issues people face following a diagnosis of dementia is social isolation. Friends, family and their community can struggle to understand how to best support and include people living with the condition.

What is a dementia-friendly organisation?

A dementia-friendly organisation is a business, organisation, local government or community group that makes changes to better meet the needs of people living with dementia. Dementia-friendly organisations are inclusive and friendly, recognising people living with dementia as equal members of the community. These organisations respond to the needs of their customers, clients, staff or volunteers living with dementia. To do this, they’re willing to make small changes that improve accessibility, inclusivity and connectedness.

The federally funded Dementia-Friendly Communities program provides access to Dementia Australia information and resources and supports communities in developing tailored plans. The program aims to build understanding, awareness and acceptance of dementia in the community.
